Australian manages to reduce illegal immigration on boats
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot has announced that his government has managed to beat down the illegal smuggling of people. He has pointed out that during the last six months there were not any illegal immigrants arriving on boats in the country. The last successful people smuggling venture to Australia was on 19 December 2013. Over the same six month period in 2012/2013 under the previous government, a total of 190 boats with 12,773 people on board illegally arrived in Australia, more than a boat a day. According to Abbot the crackdown on illegal people smuggling is delivering huge financial benefits to the government. It saved already more than two billion dollars from the Australian taxpayers. It has also led to the closure of more than 10 detention centers. In addition to that the number of children who are living in detention centers has been also reduced with one-third. Abott said that the best way to limit the number of children in the detention centers is to reduce the incoming illegal immigrants at first place. In addition to that he pointed out that the Operation Sovereign Borders in helping the government to provide 20 000 resettlement places under the Special Humanitarian Programme. The places are given to those people waiting offshore and who are in desperate conditions. He also pointed out that under the previous government over 800 boats arrived carrying more than 50,000 people, including more than 8,000 children. This resulted in over 1,000 lives lost at sea and $11 billion in budget blowouts.
