Former Polish president Lech Walesa criticizes UK anti – immigration attitude

Lech Walesa the former president of Poland has accused UK of irrational approach to its immigration policy. Mr Walesa became a globally famous figure when he led a strike by the Solidarity union at the Gdansk shipyard in 1980. After the fall of communism in eastern Europe, Mr Walesa became the first democratically elected president of Poland in 1990. He lost power in 1995. Mr Walesa gave interview to Polish TV station shortly after Cameron made his comment that the fact that transitional controls were not imposed on Polish citizens in 2004, when Poland together with several other Central European states entered EU, was a huge mistake. At that time the UK government thought that only 13 000 people from those countries will come to UK, but at the end it turned out that more than half million arrived to live and work in Britain. These high levels of immigration caused significant anger in the some parts British Press and led to the rise of far-right nationalistic parties such as UKIP and its leader Nigel Farage. Mr Cameron told journalists at the EU summit that EU countries must ‘slow down access to each other’s labour markets’. Mr Walesa said that the UK should be grateful to Poland for the role that it had played in defeating communism which had, in turn, saved the UK billions of pounds in reduced defence expenditure. According to Walesa UK should now accept Poland because in the battle with the Communism its economy suffered greatly and was almost destroyed, which led hundreds of thousands Polish people to search better opportunities to work abroad. Mr Walesa has written a letter to Cameron in which he has expressed his frustration with the UK’s anti immigration policies. Visa First is a leading international immigration consulting company. UK will not offer amnesty for illegal immigrants

The Home secretary of United Kingdom Theresa May has ruled out the possibility that the government will offer amnesty for Illegal immigrants in Britain. According to her this will send a wrong message to the foreigners. According to a recent statistical data of the London School of Economics and Political Science, there are more than 1 000 000 people. The exact number is of course unknown.  Most of those people have either entered the country illegally on boats or have been first on temporary visas and then did not leave the country after the visa had expired. Mrs May told The House ‘I think if you have an amnesty, what you are likely to end up with is not a situation which helps with the control of immigration but a situation where more people try to come to the UK illegally because the message you’re giving is that at some stage that’s going to be ok, and that’s the problem with the amnesty’. According to Theresa May, most of the ethnic minorities in UK support the new curbs that are imposed on illegal immigrants. The reason for this is that they feel that the illegal immigrants are destroying the image of the foreigners, who work legally in UK. The idea that amnesty for illegal immigration should be rejected was not without its critics. For example the London Mayor Boris Johnson said that there is already an effective amnesty and he recommended that this is made official so that immigrants who are already living and working in Great Britain start paying social security and taxes. UK immigrants have contributed more than 20 billion pounds to the country’s economy

The analysis of statistical data done by a research team from University College London the immigrants have contributed to the UK economy with more than 25 billion UK pounds in the period 2001 to 2011. In addition to that the research shows that immigrants were less likely to receive benefits or use social housing that UK citizens. The research was carried out by Professor Christian Dustmann and Dr Tommaso Frattini at UCL’s Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration. They found out that while, on average, UK citizens had paid 7% less in taxes than they had received in state spending, immigrants had paid 4% more in taxes than they had received in benefits. The probable reason for this is that most of the immigrants, who come to work in United Kingdom are young and therefore less likely to use health services than the average of all British citizens. According to the report university graduates who are coming to work in UK are expected to contribute most to the local society, because the still have not reached their careers peaks and as they advance in their job they will receive more money and pay more taxes. A further breakdown of the figures shows that immigrants from outside the European Economic Area have made ‘a negative fiscal contribution’. The report states that this is ‘partly explained by their demographic structure –non-EEA immigrants have had more children than natives and we have allocated educational expenditure for children to immigrants’. The report, however have attracted significant criticism as well. Sir Andrew Green of anti-immigration group Migrationwatch UK said that the report was misleading because it takes no account of future costs of immigration such as the costs of pensions and medical treatment as immigrants grow older.
