Bishop attacks UK Government for its immigration policy

uk_pollThe Bishop of Dudley, the Right Reverend David Walker, has attacked UK politicians for greatly exaggerating problems caused by immigration. The Bishop who was a trained mathematician was interviewed by the UK newspaper Observer after the UK deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg made a speech in which he said that there will not be any commitment to introducing amnesty for illegal immigrants who have been in UK for more than 10 years. At the same time the UK Prime Minister David Cameron said that new immigrants will be banned form receiving any social benefits, government housing and will not be able to use National Health Service. In addition to that Ed Miliband made a political broadcast in which he expressed his commitment to tackle the illegal immigration.

According to Bishop Walker the immigration fears of UK politician do not have much substance. He said that the government wants to put the blame on the immigrants for the lack of government housing and for the unemployment. After having analyzed the statistics, however he found that immigrants have little to do with that. The bishop said seeing immigrants being treated ‘as a scapegoat in a political battle’ by politicians was ‘especially galling’ for Christians in Easter week because ‘Jesus himself became a scapegoat in just such a battle’.

He thinks that the majority of immigrants that come to the country bring a lot of cultural and economical diversity. According to him the true threat for UK are not the immigrants but the increasing gap between the rich and the poor.
