Canada accepts applications for its new Federal Skilled Trades Program
On January 2, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has begun accepting applications for its new Federal Skilled Trades Program. The aim of the program is to relieve the labor shortage that exists in many Canadian regions. The program that was announced last year by the Canadian Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney will be targeted at people who have education and experience in certain occupations. The reason for creating the new program is the fact that many skilled tradespeople cannot achieve the necessary number of points under the Federal Skilled Workers Program and at the same time there is increasing demand for such professionals.
During the first year the program will welcome approximately 3000 foreign applicants. The number of occupations that will be allowed to apply for immigration is 43. The occupation list of the program is carefully designed by expert of the Canadian Government so that it reflects correctly the current shortages that exist on the Canadian labor market. Furthermore the program will ensure that the Canadian economy gets supplied with diverse range of skilled tradespeople. Within the limit of 3,000, there is no limit set for 26 in-demand occupations, but 17 remaining occupations will only have maximum of 100 places each.
In order to qualify for the program an individual must prove that he/she has sufficient knowledge of English and/or French language at the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 5 for speaking and listening, and CLB 4 for reading and writing. Furthermore all applicants must show that they have a valid employment offer in Canada or a certificate of qualification from a province or territory in a qualifying skilled trade and must prove a minimum experience of two years in last five years.
