Canada will reduce the number of visaqs available for skilled immigrants

Canadian government has announced that it will reduce the places available through its most popular immigration program – the federal skilled immigrant visa. The previous number of available visa per year will be cut down by nearly 2000. The reason for this is that the government wants to free up places for the immigrants who are already living in the country. Furthermore the changes will ensure that the foreigners who move to Canada will be more able to contribute positively for the country’s economy. The federal skilled worker program was frozen in July 2012 due to massive backlog of around 100 000 unprocessed applications.

In September 2012, the government agency Citizenship and Immigration Canada made new changes to the skilled immigration programs which prioritize young people who are fluent in English or French and have work experience in Canada. The reason for this is that in order to find a work in Canada, it is often required that applicants have job experience in the country.

According to the Canadian Immigration minister Jason Kenney the new changes will help the country to attract some of the world’s top professionals, who already possess high-quality education and rich work experience. Despite the demographic crisis, caused by the retirement of the baby boomer generation, the Canadian government will not admit more immigrants to the country. The decision was taken after the Canadian people gave a negative feedback to the government about the cultural and economic contributions that the immigrants bring to the country. Recent survey found that only 56% of the Canadians think that immigration is beneficial.
