There will be more opportunities for marketing and engineering professionals in Australia

People who are looking for a new job in Australia during 2014 might have best chances of finding one in the fields of marketing, engineering and operational management. Almost half of the Australian companies expect to increase the number of people employed in their Marketing Department during the second half of the current year. It also says that 42% will increase jobs in engineering and operational management, 37% will create opportunities in their IT and sales departments, 35% in project management and 31% in human resources. The business sentiment in the country is also on the rise. 41% of employers see a more positive economic outlook on the horizon and 66% expect their levels of business activity to increase in the year ahead. The increased confidence on the job markets means that even more candidates will be likely to make a move in their careers during the coming months. This might be viewed as positive new for those business which are searching to expand their economic activity by strengthening their workforce. The Hays Salary Guide shows salary and recruiting trends for over 1,000 roles in 14 locations. It is based on a survey of over 2,500 employers as well as placements made by Hays. Despite the fact that the recent years have been problematic due to the winding down of the mining boom and the slowdown in the house market, employers are now starting to be more positive. As the recruitment activity increases this will create a lot of skill shortages in the Australian economy which will present skilled foreign workers with an opportunity to find many new jobs in the country. Australia introduces more options for testing the English proficiency of visa applicants

Applicants that want to receive Australian visa will have more options when it come to proving their English language ability in addition to the options that are currently available.  The increase of choice will affect applications for temporary graduate, skilled, work and holiday, and former resident visas. Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Michaelia Cash, announced that the new changes will came into effect during November 2014, they will be caused by the increasing competition in the English language testing market for visas. ‘Applicants who need to provide the Department of Immigration and Border Protection with an English language test score as evidence of their English ability will be able to choose from two additional tests,’ said Cash. The tests that are currently available for all visa applicants are Test of English Language as a Foreign Language internet-based test (TOEFL iBT) and the Pearson Test of English Academic. Another factor that will contribute to the new changes will be that there are limited numbers of places where applicants can sit for those tests. One of the tests that will be added to the current portfolio will include the Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE).  This test is already being accepted for the student visa programme together with The TOEFL iBT, Pearson and Cambridge tests. The availability of the test will be expanded to other types of visa as well. Those will include temporary and permanent residence and working visas. Visa Applicants that want to take the necessary English test before submitting their visa application from November 2014  should visit the website of the Australian department of Immigration and Border Protection in order to get acquainted with the recent update and with the required minimal test scores. The Australian immigration might have already peaked

According to recent data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the immigration boom that the country is experiencing might have already peaked and the trend may reverse in the future. The Net Immigration number in April this year was 390 000 which was a little bit less in comparison with April 2013 when it was 402 000. Nevertheless the number of net immigration in Australia is still quite high. The Australian government set as its target attracting at least 250 000 immigrants per year in the next decade. The proactive immigration policy of Australia has begun since the end of the second world war.  The then immigration minister, Arthur Calwell, encouraged immigrants to settle in the country and warned that Australia will either populate or perish. The population of Australia in 1945 was about 7,400,000 and was overwhelmingly descended from British and Irish settlers, many of whom were criminals transported to Australia as punishment by the British during the 18th and 19th centuries. During the second half of twentieth century there have been waves of immigration from other European countries such as Italy, Greece, Croatia and Netherlands. Most recently Asian countries like China and India are the larges sources for new Australian immigration. With the rising number of newcomers, the Australian population has grown extremely diverse as well. Recent demographic statistics show that a third of Australians identify themselves as having ancestry in the UK, about 4.5% say they are of Chinese descent and 2% say they are ethnically Indian. In addition to that there are around 300 000 Australians born in China and 230 000 who have India as their birthplace. Despite the fact that the new coalition government said that it will cut the asylum application abuses it has stated that it remains committed to attracting other types of immigrants. Australia will change the way it protects its borders

The Immigration Minister of Australia Scott Morrison has announced that there will be a lot of changes in the way Australia defends its borders. There will be a new agency that will be created – the Australian Border Force. The ABF will be made of customs and immigration staff. The Headquarters will be based Canberra and it will be headed by and commissioner of similar seniority to the Chief of the Defence Force (Australian armed services). According to Mr Morrison the new agency will save millions of dollars to the Australian taxpayers. All the savings will be invested in further border protection measures. The new force will relay on modern technologies and on intelligence-led operations which will enable the most effective and efficient protection of the Australian borders. The main goal of the new agency will be to prevent the large number of asylum seekers reaching the Australian mainland. According to a recent statistics, in the last three years there is a soaring number of Asylum seekers trying to enter Australia. Many thousands of people took the risky journey from Indonesia to Australian waters in 2013. People from all over Asia; particularly Afghanistan, Iran, Sri Lanka and Pakistan paid up to $10,000 to make the trip. The smugglers use old boats which makes the journey very risky. There is not exact statistics about how many people have drowned on the way to the Australian coasts. At the same time the public opinion in Australia seems to be strongly against the Asylum seekers, which has forced the government to reopen the camps in Papua New Guinea and Nauru, where the asylum seekers are hosted, until their applications are processed in Australia. The new ruling coalition led by Tony Abbot has got much further in their attempt to protect the Australian borders. He has promised to deploy the Australian navy in order to send the asylum seekers back to Indonesia.  The new government instigated Operation Sovereign Borders, a coordinated military campaign aimed at preventing asylum seekers reaching Australia. New Zealand immigration hits all time highs

Up until March 2014, the New Zealand immigration has 31 900 people per year. This is the highest level in the last decade and the second highest ever. Most of the New Zealand immigrants come from China which is followed by India and UK. Many if the Chinese immigrants are wealthy businessmen, who become permanent residents with a investor type visas. Around 3,000 Chinese applicants were issued with one of New Zealand’s investor visas, the Investor Visa and the Investor Visa Plus during the year in question.  New Zealand is purposefully searching or new immigrants during the last ten years, because the government is concerned that the low birth rates and the high immigration among native New Zealanders will translate into lower economic growth and labor market shortages. In the past the largest part of the new immigrants have come from United Kingdom, but in the recent years there is an increase of people which arrive from various Asian countries such as China, Thailand and the Philippines. It is clear from the latest figures that China’s economic success has meant that many Chinese citizens are wealthy enough to qualify for investor visas. New Zealand has two main types of investor visa. The standard one requires an investment of 1,5 Million NZD within a period of 4 years. All applicants for this type of visa must speak good English. The second one is called an investor visa plus and requires an investment of NZ 10 Million. It does not have any language requirements, but applicants must not have any criminal records and must be in good health. Previously, Canada was a popular destination of choice for Chinese citizens but, with the closure of Canada’s Immigrant Investor Program many are looking for alternatives. According to mr Packer, the Australian resorts receive, direct competition from resorts located in other countries and the stringent visa rules for Chinese citizens are making the things difficult for local hotels and casinos. During an interview on Melbourne radio station 3AW693 News Talk, Mr Packer said ‘Why would it be any harder for a Chinese citizen to get a visa to visit Australia than it would be for an American citizen to get a visa to visit Australia?”. In addition to that Mr Packer thinks that it does not make sense that visa applications for Chinese citizens must  be filled in English and must be processed through the post, instead face to face.  Mr Packer is one of the best connected Australian businessmen.
