5 Myths About Australian Working Holiday Visa

Australian Working Holiday visa is one of the most popular visas among the young people. Australia has currently working holiday arrangements with 20 countries, allowing their passport holders aged between 18 and 30 to spend one year in the country with a limited permission to work up to 6 months in any one job. There’s a lot of information on this visa and you’ve probably heard different stories of your friends’ experiences Down Under. But don’t trust everything – Australian Working Holiday visa is surrounded by so many myths. We’ll try to reveal 5 of them here. Myth No 1: I can get more than one working holiday visa! This is possible only if you do harvest work for 3 months on your first visa. If you don’t want to be in a farm, you can’t avail yourself of a second working holiday visa. You can apply for your second visa immediately after the first one expires or at any time before you turn 31. Myth No 2: If I do 3 months farm work, the government will automatically extend my current visa for another year. If you stay after your first working holiday visa expires without doing anything, you can get illegal in the country. You need to apply for a Second Working Holiday visa before your first one expires. Remember, it’s your responsibility to adhere to your current visa validity and conditions. Myth No 3: I won’t be able to return to Australia if I claim my Superannuation back! Not true. Superannuation is actually a pension fund and your employer is obliged to pay 12% of your wages in that account. You will be able to use this amount after you get retired in Australia but as you are in the country for a Working holiday only, you can claim your superannuation once your visa expires. The Conditions under the Australian Working Holiday Visa to be revised

Today, the Australian Fair Work Ombudsman announced that the conditions under the Working Holiday 417 visa are going to be revised because of some allegations that the working holiday makers are used as a free labour in regional areas. The working holiday 417 visa is granted to people under 31 to holiday and work in Australia for up to 2 years. Those who want to qualify for the second year working holiday visa, need to provide a proof that they’ve been undertaking work in a regional area and in certain industry for 88 days during the first year. The number of Australian Working Holiday visas that Australia has issued rises significantly

According to the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship there is a large increase in the number of Working Holiday Visas that were issued during the current year. Australian Working Holiday visas allow young people aged between 18 and 30 years to live and work in Australia for up to one year. In some cases those visas could be extended for one additional year. This happens when the visa holders agree to undertake job assignments in some pre-designated rural areas. All applicants must come from such countries with which Australia has signed reciprocal Working Holiday Visa agreements. The first Australian Working Holiday agreement was established back in 1975 and at that time only three countries were participating – United Kingdom, Canada and Ireland. Since that time Australia has signed working holiday agreements with various other countries. Presently more than 15 countries participate in the program in addition to the three initial participants. As of 1 November 2013 those countries are: Japan South Korea Malta Germany Sweden Norway Denmark Hong Kong Finland Cyprus Italy France Taiwan Belgium Estonia and Netherlands During 2012/2013 years more than 200 000 thousands Working Holiday Visas were issued to young people from abroad who want to visit Australia. The top five countries of origin for Working Holiday Visa applicants are: United Kingdom – 38,782 (up 8.6%) South Korea – 29,614 (up 8.1%) Taiwan – 28,599 (up 57%) Germany – 24,687 (up 17%) France – 22,539 (up 22.6%) DIAC notes that there were also large increases in the number of working holiday visas granted for Italy (up 64%) and Hong Kong (up 50%). There were also 38,862 second Working Holiday visas issued in 2012/13 to backpackers who had completed three months working in a designated rural area. Much of the increase in the number of Working Holiday Visa can be explained by the Global Financial Crisis which started during 2008 and which has led to record levels of unemployment in many European countries. Australia and Urugay sign a Working Holiday Agreement

Australia and Uruguay have signed new Working Holiday Agreement that will allow their citizens to enjoy extended holidays in each others country. Uruguay is currently the last country to sign a Working Holiday Agreement with Australia joining other countries such as Argentina, Bangladesh, Chile, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Turkey and the United States of America. The Australian minister of Immigration Chris Bowen signed the agreement with the ambassador of Uruguay in Australia Alberto Fajardo in the Parliament house in Canberra. The agreement provides young university-educated Australian, who are aged between 18 and 30 years old to work and live in Ecuador for up to 12 months. The Working Holiday Visa will help its participants to experience new culture and will foster the economic and cultural ties between Australian and Uruguay.  Furthermore the agreement reinforces the mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries, which is based on shared interests, greater economic cooperation, and growing trade and tourism links.
