Zemanta Related Posts ThumbnailLeader of all European Union countries will meet in Brussels in order to discuss the digital economy and the data security. It is widely expected that during the meeting illegal immigration will be put on the debating table as well. The reason for this is that illegal immigration has become a matter of grave concern since the death of 364 migrants who drowned off the Italian island of Lampedusa on October 3rd 2013. Many European countries such as Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus and Italy are very concerned with the increased number of illegal immigrants, who enter their territories as they are dislocated by the ongoing military conflicts in the Middle East. Most of these immigrants are currently living in camps in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan. Many of them however attempt to cross the borders in a search for better work and life for them and their children.  The countries are also concerned that the EU has cut funding for the policing of the EU’s external border leaving southern and eastern countries, which are short of funds after the financial crisis of 2008, to finance enforcement operations.

The European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States which serves as a border police for the union hat to cut its budget with around 33 million Euro. At the same time the number of immigrants which try to enter with boats form Africa has increased three to four times. There are also more migrants attempting to reach the Canary Islands and more attempting to reach Greece by sea and by land.

The Italian Premier Minister Enrico Letta has already tried to push European Union authorities to increase the budget of The European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States and to proceed with the creation of Eurosur. He has been supported by Spain in his efforts. Many experts however predict that this will not be able to solve the problems that are created by illegal immigration
