Illegal Immigration in USA rises

The number of people, who illegally cross the US border is increasing again after it has dropped during the recession. The total number of immigrants living in this country unlawfully edged up from 11.3 million in 2009 to 11.7 million last year, with those from countries other than Mexico at an apparent all-time high, according to a report released Monday by the Pew Research Center’s Hispanic Trends Project. In historical perspective the number of immigrants coming to US has always been tied to the strength of the US economy. After the 2009 the employment rate in US has risen with more than one 1%, in addition to that the construction sector, where traditionally a lot of low-skilled immigrants work has emerged from the recession which started in 2008. According to many immigration experts it is hard to predict whether the number of illegal migrants will beat the previous record of 12 million that was reached during 2007. Some of them doubt this due the changing nature of various demographic characteristics such as the aging of the Mexican workforce. Om addition to that the labor demand in US is still slow and the economic recovery is too sluggish which diminishes the employment opportunities that US immigrants have.

As the latest numbers of illegal immigration in US come out, the prospect for introducing a new immigration bill appears to be dismal. A bill passed by the Democratic-controlled Senate and backed by the White House includes billions for border security as well as a 13-year path to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants already here illegally. Many of the republicans in the House of Representatives reject the comprehensive approach and prefer many single issue immigration bills instead.
