Ireland and Taiwan have signed a mutual working holiday agreement earlier this month. The agreement will give the opportunity to young people from both countries to visit each other’s country for a period of up to one year. The new program will have an established quota of 400 people. It will start at 1 January 2012.

In order to be eligible to participate in the program, the candidates must be between 18 and 30 years old. They will be enabled to visit the partner country for purposes such as tourism, work, or privately funded studies. During their stay they will have the right to apply for a temporary job to finance their extended holiday.

According to the Irish Foreign Ministry the program will offer a lot of advantages from both sides such as long lasting friendships between the youth of both countries. Furthermore it will help young people to expand their international experience and broaden their horizons by learning new language and experiencing a different culture and lifestyle.

Ireland is the eighth country with which Taiwan has launched such a program, after New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Canada, Germany, South Korea and the UK, the ministry said.

Taiwan is to become the seventh country to participate in Ireland’s working-holiday program, along with Argentina, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea.

An official source from the Taiwanese Foreign Ministry who wished to remain anonymous revealed that Taiwan intends to begin negotiations about establishing Working Holiday Program with other European countries such as Belgium and Netherlands. This is a clear sign that the Working Holiday Program is in accordance with the desires of young people in Taiwan to trave abroad and to take part in international youth exchanges.
