More than 800 000 illegal immigrants live in UK
A new report that was published by the leading UK university London School of Economics estimates that there are a little bit more than 800 000 illegal immigrants living in UK. Most of them – around 600 000, are located in London. The report says that most of the countries from which illegal immigrants are coming include: China, India, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Most of the findings of the report are accepted by the government of United Kingdom. Illegal residents could be divided in the two categories – those who have entered the country illegally and those who have entered legally but have overstayed their visas. According to the LSE researches most of the illegal immigrants fall into the second category. During December 2012, the office for national statistics released a report which shows that almost 13% of the population of the country is born outside Britain.
The immigration minister Mark Harper blamed the previous government for the big numbers of immigrants who have settled in UK. According to him this was a direct result of many years of uncontrolled immigration that happened under the Labour Party government between 2007 and 2011.He added the his party is determined to regain control over the inbound migration of the people, He gives as an example the fact that during the last year the number of immigrants coming to UK has fallen for first time since 7 years.
In addition to the above stated findings the report show that between 2004 and 2012 more than 14 000 illegal immigrants were granted permission to remain in the UK indefinitely based on fourteen years of stay in the UK. This “fourteen year rule”, which gave permission to people who have remained in UK legally or illegally for 14 years or more to apply for a permanent residence, was however abolished by the Conservative party.
