New minumum salary levels for the Australian Sponsorship Visa (subclass 457)

Australian Department of Immigration and citizenship has announced new  minimum salary levels for the Australian Sponsorship Visa (subclass 457). From 1 July 2012 all applicants for the 457 visa must earn at least 51 400 Australian Dollars. The minimum salary requirement for the Australian Sponsorship Visa ensures that all visa holders have enough money to support themselves during their stay in Australia.

This salary minimum is called the ‘Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold’, or the TSMIT for short. It is very important for all Australian Sponsorship Visa holders, since they do not have right to receive any government benefits. Furthermore the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold guarantees that the Australian Sponsorship Visa is given only to skilled professionals, who have prior work experience rather than to fresh university graduates, applying for entry level job positions. The Australian Government indexes TSMIT every year, so that it can stay in line with the increase of the Australian average salary.

Between February 2011 and February 2012 the average salary in Australia grew with 4,2%. In response to this increase Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold was increased from its previous level of 49,330 AUD to the current of 51,400 AUD.

The new TSMIT will be used at the time when the applications for the Australian Sponsorship Visa are decided. This means that even if there are applications that were submitted before the implementation of the new TSMIT, if processed from now on, they will be assessed according to the new threshold.

The higher level of the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold, ensures that each applicant for the Australian Sponsorship Visa (subclass 457), have high level of English proficiency. All people who earn a salary above 92 000 AUD will be excluded from the minimum English language requirements, which other visa applicants must meet.
