Record number of immigrants comes to New Zealand
The latest statistic data from the government of New Zealand shows a lot of New Zealanders are immigrating to Australia. Nearly 40 000 people left the country during June 2012 and settled to Australia and other neighboring countries. This is a highest amount of outbound migration ever to be recorded in New Zealand. Large part of the immigrants is young people who are looking for their fist job. They are attracted by the fact that Australia is a larger labour market and provides them with more career opportunities. Another advantage is that it is just few flight hours away from their home country. In addition to that they are not required to obtain an Australian visa in order to live and work there.
The net migration number however stays positive, because a record number of people are coming to the country as well. In June 2012 was observed the highest inflow of immigrants in the last 16 months. Most of them are coming from United Kingdom (5500) followed by China (5200) and India (5200). Foreigners are usually attracted by the fact that New Zealand is not severely affected by the global economic crisis, offers high quality of living and is known as family friendly destination. As the hopes for quick economic recovery of United States and Europe evaporate, many people are searching for a place where they can raise their children away from the economic restrictions and the austerity measures of their home countries. According to the chief economist of the Bank of New Zealand Tony Alexander, the trend of the increasing inbound migration is likely to continue during the next several years.
In order to respond to the changing demand, New Zealand has introduced the Silver Fern visas which allow young professionals to come and stay for 9 months in the country while searching for jobs. Once they find one, their visa is extended for two years more while they apply for permanent residence.
