Scottish government criticizes UK immgiration policy
Humza Yousaf, who is the Scottish government’s external affairs minister, has criticized the new restrictive immigration policies of United Kingdom, stating that they are hampering the economic development of Scotland. According to him the Scottish society as a whole is opposed to the immigration policies in England. He says that immigration is the only policy issue that unites the business leaders in Scotland together with the trade unions and the politicians, because all of them are feeling the negative consequences of the restrictive policies.
Mr Yousaf himself is a children of immigrants, his mother is from Kenya and his father is from Pakistan. His opinion is that the new policy is designed in such a way that is attractive to voters in England, but it is deterring many skilled immigrants, who are vital to the Scottish economy, to enter the country.
Currently Scotland is part of the United Kingdom. In 1999 then Prime Minister Tony Blair gave some exclusive powers to the Scottish Parliament but issues such as immigration are still decided by Westminster. n January 2010, the then leader of the UK’s Opposition Conservative Party, David Cameron, promised to cut UK immigration to below 100,000 per year by 2015 if he became prime minister at the 2010 general election. He made this promise at a time when the issue of immigration was of great concern to the public, according to opinion polls, and when the net annual immigration figure (the difference between the number of people immigrating and the number leaving the country) was about 260,000.
According to some statistical estimates more than 2 million immigrants have settled in UK between 2000 and 2010. The conservative government led by David Cameron has managed to reduce the net immigration to nearly 150 000 people per year. The immigrants are not settling evenly throughout UK. The vast amount of them goes to London and South England. Scotland has managed to attract fewer numbers of foreigners.
