UK MP calls for amnesty for the 570 000 illegal immigrants in the country
An UK MP says that in the near future the UK Government should introduce and amnesty to the 570 000 illegal immigrants who live in the country. According to Nadhim Zahawi, who is himself and immigrant this move will help the conservative party to gain more supporters among the ethnic minorities. Mr Zahawi came in UK from Iraq when at a very young age together with his family. He developed his idea for amnesty in an essay. His opinion is that the Conservative party should take non-standard measures in order to gain support from minority communities.
He says that the amnesty would be likely to increase support for the Conservatives and would also have economic benefits for the UK. On 28th June 2013, Mr Zahawi told Victoria Derbyshire on BBC Radio 5 Live’s morning show that the current situation ‘cheats the Treasury out of billions’.
The Conservative Party is currently not vey popular among ethnic minorities. According to recent polls only 6% of the ethnic minority groups support the Conservative Party. At the same time the Labour Party has gained support from 53% of the people who are in the ethnic minorities. This may be one of the most important reasons why the Conservative Party is currently ruling in coalition, but not alone, despite by the fact that the last election were held in 2010 at the height of the recession. The previously riling Labour party was considered to hold the main responsibility by the majority of the UK population.
They had, instead, to form a coalition with the centrist Liberal Democrat Party in order to establish a parliamentary majority. Ethnic minority voters now make up a growing proportion of the UK electorate, particularly in London and other British cities.
