UK will split its Border Agency
The UK Home Secretary Theresa May has announced that the main immigration body of UK Border Agency will be split in two. The first department will deal with visa applications and the second will be responsible for illegal immigrants. The reason for the split is because the organization is too overloaded with documentation which has lead to record number of delayed cases and backlogs. In addition to that the number of illegal immigrants which is removed in UK does not match the number of illegal immigrants that come and remain in the country. At the same time the visa operation is still competitive by the international standards, but there is a lot of room for improvement. The statement of Ms May was a surprise for everybody. Last week the UK immigration minister Mark Harper said the efforts for improvement of UK Border Agency will continue.
But on Monday 25th March 2013, the Home Affairs Select Committee, a committee of MPs charged with oversight of the running of the Home Office, which includes the UKBA, issued a damning report which said that the UKBA was failing. According to the report UK Bordere Agency processed less than 20% of Tier 1 and Tier 4 visa applications and at the same time failed to prices one quarter of the premium visa applications within 24 hours. In addition to that Ms May blamed the secretive and defensive culture of the Agency. She said that UKBA received agency status during the last Labour government in order to be on arm’s length from the ministers.
